When the students of City College wanted to worship Goddess Saraswati, the administrative body which was controlled by the Brahmas objected. Brahmo Samaj was ideologically opposed to image worship and hence did not want to allow such a travesty in the college that they controlled. But the students were adamant. They accused the administration of preventing their freedom of worship. The students got the support of Subhas Chandra Bose. On the other hand Rabindranath Tagore, Ramananda Chattopadhyay, Herombochandra Maitra, had opposed the same on the ground of Brahmo religious belief. Subhas was permanently banned from City College as a result, but he did not compromise with the ideals. It is difficult to understand why Rabindranath stooped so low as to ask for stopping Saraswati Puja in the college premises.
